Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coordinator

Dr. Ramon Griffin
Hello AP Family,

I am thrilled to be joining the team as the new Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Coordinator. Over the past few years, I have been blessed to work alongside Allen Park teachers, former students and leaders in the district on initiatives like the Racial Awareness and Equity Task Force (R.A.E.), S.T.A.R. (Students and Teachers Against Racism) as well as the Diversity PLC. I designed and facilitated several workshops for teachers and staff focused broadly on culturally responsive teaching practices, implicit biases, microaggressions, exclusionary disciplinary practices, restorative justice, trauma-informed practices and behavior engagement techniques with vulnerable populations. This important work has been critically important to the pedagogical and relational development of leaders and teachers in Allen Park. We have made some incredible progress towards changing hearts and minds within the district and I plan to continue that impact trajectory in this new DEI role.

Prior to consulting with Allen Park, I served in a cabinet level position at the University of Chicago Charter School (UCCS) as Chief Culture Officer (CCO) for two years. I graduated from Michigan State University with a Ph.D. in K-12 Educational Administration focusing on the ramifications of ‘No Excuses’ discipline in urban schools, the hazardous effects of complex trauma, and the school to prison pipeline for adolescent black males in 2018. I also worked as a teacher, a dean of students and as a director of school culture in Charter Management Organizations (CMOs) in Houston, New Orleans, and Detroit. Before becoming an educator in 2009, I served as a juvenile detention officer in Harris County, TX for almost two years. I am a proud Ford Heights, IL native and I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice from the historically black college, Dillard University in New Orleans, LA.

We have an incredible opportunity before us to move the district forward around diversity, equity and inclusion for all Allen Park stakeholders during the upcoming school year. I am eager to learn from each of you and hope to build meaningful relationships as the year goes on. Let’s make transformation look good together. There is only one Allen Park!

In Solidarity,

Ramon M. Griffin, Ph.D.
